Taxonomically, the genus Xiphophorus belongs to the family Poeciliidae, sharing the same classification as mosquitofish and guppies. Members of this family are characterized by an elongated body shape that is somewhat wedge-shaped at the front and laterally compressed at the rear, with a protrusible, upward-facing mouth. The dorsal fin is short and positioned on the posterior half of the body. Identification features include the shape of the teeth, the structure of the snout, and the morphology of the gonopodium. Regarding the specific characteristics of swordtails, the caudal fin can be truncate or forked, with the lower lobe of the forked caudal fin being elongated, resembling a dagger or a short sword.
Native to Central America and Mexico, swordtails inhabit freshwater environments. They prefer slow-moving streams, ditches, and swamps with abundant cover, typically in environments with a mix of vegetation and muddy substrates. Their diet includes invertebrates such as worms and insects, as well as plant debris.
Swordtails are popular in aquaculture and the aquarium trade. Individuals sourced from farms may include hybrid strains, so their characteristics may differ from those of wild populations. In Taiwan, swordtails found in the wild are considered an invasive species, likely originating from escaped individuals or improper release.

Handcrafted by Hailiu Studio using the diaphonization technique, our "Miniature Museum on Your Desk" series offers unique, one-of-a-kind specimens in glass bottles. The preservation fluid is safe and non-toxic, allowing for permanent display. Start collecting your own biological encyclopedia today!

The specimens used by Hailiu are sourced from fish waste, invasive species, or individuals that died naturally in aquaculture farms. Through a delicate process involving multiple reagents and dyes, we transform these fading remains into beautiful, one-of-a-kind transparent specimens without compromising the integrity of the organism.
